London/Islamabad : In a major boost to Pakistan’s aviation sector and international air connectivity, the United Kingdom has officially removed Pakistan from its air safety list, effectively lifting long-standing restrictions on Pakistani airlines operating flights to the UK. This milestone was announced on Tuesday by the British High Commission in Islamabad, marking a significant improvement in Pakistan’s aviation safety standards.
Pakistani Airlines Can Now Apply for UK Flight Operations
With this positive development, Pakistan-based airlines, including Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and potential private carriers, are now eligible to apply for permission to operate direct flights between Pakistan and the UK. The decision was made by the UK Air Safety Committee following an independent technical assessment of Pakistan’s regulatory improvements in civil aviation oversight and safety protocols.
“This step reflects Pakistan’s progress in aligning with international aviation safety standards,” stated the British High Commission. “It paves the way for a stronger and safer air travel relationship between the two nations.”
Next Step: Operational Approval by UK Civil Aviation Authority
Although the removal from the safety list is a crucial achievement, Pakistani airlines will still need to obtain operational clearance from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) before they can officially commence passenger or cargo services to British airports. The operational approval process will include assessments of airline capability, safety records, compliance procedures, and aircraft certifications.
British High Commissioner Praises Bilateral Cooperation
British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott, welcomed the development and praised the cooperation between UK and Pakistani aviation experts. “This decision reflects the hard work and dedication of regulators, inspectors, and civil aviation authorities from both countries. I look forward to traveling on a Pakistani airline soon,” she said.
She emphasized that the restoration of air links will not only provide more choices for travelers but also promote trust in Pakistan’s aviation sector internationally.
Enhanced UK-Pakistan Air Connectivity to Benefit Trade and Families
The High Commission highlighted the broader implications of this aviation milestone, noting that enhanced UK-Pakistan air connectivity will benefit the diaspora, tourists, and the business community. With over 1.6 million people of Pakistani origin residing in the UK, the resumption of direct flights by Pakistani airlines will facilitate family reunions, religious tourism, and bilateral trade.
The UK remains Pakistan’s third-largest trading partner, with annual trade valued at £4.7 billion. Increased flight options are expected to further strengthen economic ties, enhance cargo transportation capabilities, and support tourism growth.
Background: Why Pakistan Was on the Air Safety List
Pakistan was previously placed on the UK’s air safety list after concerns raised by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and ICAO over pilot licensing irregularities and regulatory oversight in 2020. Since then, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has undertaken extensive reforms, improved transparency, and implemented international best practices.
The UK’s decision comes after a rigorous technical evaluation process, which confirmed that Pakistan now meets the necessary safety benchmarks set by global aviation bodies.
