Peshawar: The constitutional gulf between the federation and the provinces has also started to deepen. Despite the passage of a year, the doors of the Upper House are closed to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and various tricks and pretexts have also distanced Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from this constitutional right of federalism.
There are unstoppable objections from the Election Commission of Pakistan in the tactic of preventing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from gaining a majority in the Senate, due to which even after a year, Senate candidates could not be elected in the Provincial Assembly.
Elections could not be held on the 11 vacant Senate seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa even after a year. Due to the lack of a decision on reserved seats in the Provincial Assembly, new members from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could not reach the Upper House in place of the retired members from 2024.
Due to political tension, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could not get representation in the Senate from 2024. When the 2018 senators retired in 2024, new members could not be elected in their place.
Elections were to be held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on April 2 for seven general, two women and two technocrat seats.
But the Senate elections were also postponed due to the unavailability of reserved seats in the provincial assembly.
There were 16 candidates for seven general seats, four for two women seats and four for two technocrat seats in the provincial assembly.
